I had several conferences with Jessica's doctors, as well as one difficult meeting with her precinct psychologist. He was, as Jessica had said, overworked and frayed enough that I wondered how well he was really serving the police officers who needed him. He didn't like my proposed therapy one bit, but I politely told him to shove it. Jessica had given her informed consent.

"And it's not as if you're helping her much," I said by way of farewell at the end of our meeting.

I decided that starting next semester, I would offer internship credits to any post-graduate students willing to volunteer their time at the city police stations as therapists. But in the meantime, I had Jessica and Alex to worry about.

There were a few more one-on-one sessions between Jessica and I, too. Each one went about as well – and as poorly – as the first. Jessica felt happy and safe with me until I mentioned any men. With her permission, I even spoke to her duty sergeant at the station and wasn't surprised to learn that Jessica was even having trouble on patrol with any male partners. For the time being, she was pairing Jessica only with female officers, but that was hardly a long term-solution.

So I told both Jessica and Alex to request the next weekend off of work. Jessica was no trouble – her superiors were eager to see her improve – but I had to put in a call to Alex's duty officer and discreetly explain the situation. After a little spluttering, Alex was released for the weekend.

"Do you really think I can help?" Alex asked me that night on the phone.

"I think so," I answered. "It won't be easy, however. In order to repair Jessica's comfort zone, we may need to push you a little outside of yours."

"That's fine," Alex said quickly. "Whatever it takes."

"I thought you might say that. But you remember your safe word, Alex?"

"Yes."

I could practically hear him blushing over the phone.

"What time should I be at your house?" Alex asked with only a slight stammer.

"Nine tomorrow morning. Jessica will be arriving at ten. I'd like to have you in place before then."

"Can I talk to her about it? Or is this… I don't know… a secret?"

"Of course you can talk to her about it," I said. "We want her to feel safe."

"What about me?"

I grinned and adjusted my glasses. No one said that even my most serious therapies couldn't be fun.

"Just remember your safe word, Alex," I told him.
